Majolica creates a genuine “thermal flywheel”: it gathers the heat radiated by the fire and transmits it in a constant and uniform way. Piazzetta ceramic surrounds require a complex finishing process in order to find that delicate balance capable of containing mechanical and thermal tensions, of resisting heat and heat surges, of being a good thermal conductor, and of being capable of being formed into large surfaces of a particular shape. Hairline cracks, dotting and shadowing are phenomena which distinguish hand-crafted majolica products and which make each single piece a unique example. |
